Tips for Basement Renovations

By : Abd. Mudeffar

When we hear of the word “basement”, we oftentimes think about storage areas found underneath the house. Truth be told, more people use their basements as storage areas than living quarters.

Those who use them for the latter however find that they are in for a lot of questions. Basements are harder to design than other areas of the house specifically because there is no natural light that can enter the area. Windows are also rendered unusable because of the location of the basement.

Therefore, basement renovations should focus on reducing the cave-like feeling inside the basement.

The first tip is to try to bring in natural light to the basement. This can be done by using window wells or by strategically building the basement on one side of a hill. If this is not possible, try to at least imitate the natural light by using light sources that do so.

The second tip is to use colors which add vibrance and brightness to the basement. Warmer colors are perfect for this job.

The third tip is to also decorate the ceiling. In most basements, the floor to ceiling height is small.

Using lighter color on the ceiling will promote the illusion of having a higher ceiling and ultimately improve the feeling of being inside the living room.
